The resort comprises five villages set at different altitudes – Tignes Le Lac, Tignes Val Claret and Tignes Le Lavachet are found high above the tree line at 2100m, while Les Boisses and Les Brevieres are lower down the valley, at 1800m and 1550m respectively. Every village is equally well-connected via regular shuttle bus, so wherever you stay, you can easily access all of the resort’s fab facilities. Tignes mountain facts
Tignes has three main ski areas: L'Aiguille Percée, Grande Motte Glacier, and Tovière, with altitudes between 1550m and 3456m. Most of the slopes are easy to reach from either Val Claret or Tignes Le Lac. Les Brévières – a small and quiet ski village – sits at the lowest point of Tignes and offers decent off-piste terrain as well as a fantastic mix of runs for beginner and intermediate skiers.
One of the standout areas is the Grande Motte Glacier, which boasts the highest peak and offers year-round skiing. Tovière has easy connections to neighbouring Val d'Isère, too, giving you even more slopes to explore. And if you're skiing down L'Aiguille Percée, be sure to look for the iconic "Eye of the Needle" rock formation.
Snow conditions in Tignes
Thanks to its altitude, Tignes is one of the most snow-sure ski resorts in France. It tends to get good snow coverage early in the season, which usually lasts well into spring. It also has solid snow-making facilities to keep the runs covered in unusually warm weather.

Freeriders: Hit the Grande Motte Glacier overlooking Val Claret for its wide-open freeriding areas. The Glacier stays open all year, allowing for summer snowboarding if you're up for it.- Park rats: If you want to practice grabbing big air before heading on the half-pipe, the snow park has a free airbag where you can try out new tricks. You'll also find several small kickers and jibs for mastering jumps, jibbing, j-turns, side slipping and – dare we say it – backflips. The 'Shoot My Ride' system records your run, too. Don't forget to download it if you landed a particularly gnarly run or want to share that insane wipeout with all your friends.

Tignes is as famous for its epic nightlife as it is for its incredible slopes (and that's saying something). Many bars are busy from mid-afternoon when the first skiers pull up for a cheeky après beer. As the evening unfolds, you can find hotspots offering everything from live music and DJ sets to legendary "table-stomping" in your ski boots with the Tignes locals. When you've finished playing on the snow for the day, here are a few highlights:
- We can't rave about après-ski in Tignes without mentioning The Marmot Arms. 'The Marmot' (as the seasonaires lovingly call it) is a British-style boozer in Tignes Le Lac that serves up a great selection of beers and live music. Oh, and did we mention they do sensational homemade gourmet burgers?
- If partying late into the night sounds like your kind of après-ski, try Loop Bar in Tignes Le Lac. Its busy outdoor terrace is the perfect sun trap in the afternoon and offers a breathtaking view of the sunset over the mountains. As well as its buzzing atmosphere and signature shots, live music, DJs and even comedians are on the menu, so there really is something for everyone.

How do you get to Tignes?
Fly to Geneva, Lyon, or Chambéry and join a coach or airport transfer to the resort. The drive from the airport is usually no more than 3 hours.
If you're planning to travel by rail, book the train to Bourg-Saint-Maurice and get a taxi or bus to Tignes. Self-drive is also an option (a very popular one, too!) if you want more control and flexibility over your itinerary.
What are Tignes' different villages?
Tignes ski resort is made up of five villages, each with its own charm. Val Claret has the best nightlife and enjoys proximity to the glacier. Le Lac is central, offering lakeside views and easy access to lifts. Le Lavachet is quieter but still close to the action. Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières are lower down, offering a more chilled, traditional mountain village feel – ideal if you want a more relaxed atmosphere with tree-lined runs.
Can beginners ski in Tignes?
Of course!
