Skiing in The Three Valleys

The skiing legacy of The Three Valleys dates back to 1925, when British investors commissioned Arnold Lunn, renowned skier and creator of the slalom, to survey the terrain in the Saint-Bon valley. Their objective was to establish an extensive, top-tier resort capable of competing with those in Austria and Switzerland. Over the years, the region has undergone continuous enhancement and growth, leveraging technological advancements to provide guests with outstanding on-piste adventures. Pioneering initiatives such as the Three Valleys ski pass, introduced in 1971, seamlessly integrated the resorts into a cohesive network, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all visitors.

The Three Valleys now encompasses an impressive 1400 square kilometres of top-notch skiing terrain, where each resort maintains its distinct characteristics and is seamlessly connected by a highly efficient lift system.

Here's an overview of skiing opportunities in the main resorts:

Intermediate skiers based in Méribel can enjoy a diverse range of blue and red runs facing east in the Tougnete area of the Méribel Valley. For those seeking a bit more challenge, the Roc du Tougne drag lift provides access to the renowned Bartevalle black run, known for its steep, north-facing slope that retains snow well and offers a demanding experience, especially when natural moguls form.

If you're craving additional red and blue runs in Méribel, take the Dent du Burgin chairlift to access well-maintained west-facing slopes between Saulire and Méribel. Among these, Le Serf stands out as one of the best, extending from Saulire to the Rond Point des Pistes.

In Val Thorens, situated at high altitude, you have a plethora of options with numerous red and blue runs. The red runs, like the lengthy descent to Orelle in the Maurienne Valley, offer exciting exploration, while the Genepi blue run provides a broad, sweeping path, perfect for building confidence.

Courchevel 1850 boasts expansive nursery slopes and green pistes, ideal for beginners to gain their footing. Additionally, the resort features eight complimentary drag lifts scattered throughout. Above the resort, you'll find delightful cruisy blue runs, such as the Pyramide run starting from the Roc Merlet summit, and Park City offers even more vibrant blue and red runs.

For advanced skiers, Courchevel offers thrilling challenges with steep couloirs next to the Saulire cable car, known as The Ugly Sisters. Most of these routes are off-piste, except for the notorious Grand Couloir. Alternatively, take the Chanrossa lift to access the Jockeys and Jean Blanc mogul runs.

In Les Menuires, the south-facing slopes on the Three Valleys side may experience lower snow quality in late-season March and April due to sun exposure. However, snowmaking facilities help alleviate this issue. Conversely, the north-facing and east-facing pistes maintain snow throughout the season, with lifts reaching 2804m at the Pointe de la Masse summit, offering on- and off-piste opportunities for expert skiers. Alternatively, you can opt for a gentler descent via the blue Bouquetin run for a scenic experience.
