An Austrian ski destination in the state of Salzburg and district of Zell am Zee, Saalbach ski resort is part of the Skicircus Area, which includes Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn. This vast area covers several mountain chains and valleys, including the beautiful Kitzbühel Alps.

This is sunny and friendly ski location with a 1050m resort altitude, a snow range of 709m – 2096m, an impressive 270km of pistes for skiers of all stripes and a super-efficient ski lift network comprising 70 lifts and a swift new 10-seater gondola that ferries a whopping 2600 skiers up the mountain per hour.

Saalbach is ‘the home of Lässig’ (laid-back ski culture), but that doesn’t mean that it’s not passionate about the quality of its pistes ̶ it attracts international pro events like the Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup as well as everyday snowsports enthusiasts from all over Europe and beyond.

This is a great resort for novices, with superb ski schools and lots of gentle beginner’s runs, while there’s a huge choice of blue and red runs of varying difficulty for intermediate skiers. Meanwhile a few tasty black runs test advanced skiers and there’s some great off-piste after a fresh dump of powder, particularly on thrilling ungroomed runs between the trees.

If you’re a rider you won’t be disappointed with the snowboarding in Saalbach either, with lots of easy freeriding, plenty of sweeping intermediate slopes and two cracking parks available, including one for novices and a night park where you can tackle gnarly rails and boxes after dark. The pistes are spacious, with plenty of ungroomed terrain in between for off-piste fun and you can hire a local mountain guide if you want to explore the expansive Skicircus backcountry.

Other outdoor activities here include horse-drawn sleigh rides, cross-country skiing, tobogganing and more, so if you want a break from skiing or snowboarding for a day, there’s plenty to keep you entertained.

Off the slopes, Saalbach is a traditional Austrian mountain town with authentic architecture and genuine Alpine hospitality and the apres-ski scene comprises cafes, bars and restaurants in the resort centre complemented by ski huts scattered across the mountainside where you can pop in and enjoy a reviving glass of gluhwein, a hot chocolate or a tasty snack. The après in Hinterglemm is a little quieter than Saalbach, but it still has its charms, while Leogang has a lovely ambience and family-friendly Fieberbrunn has a half pipe and adventure pool.

Ski holidays in Saalbach can suit couples, families or larger groups and there’s a wide range of accommodation options including chalets, ski apartments and hotels for various tastes and budgets.

When you want a laid-back ski resort with sublime scenery, awesome apres-ski and ample attractions for downhill skiers, freeriders and boarders, Saalbach-Hinterglemm ticks every box!

Skiing in Saalbach

Saalbach has a medium-altitude resort height, but thanks to a snow range that extends to over 2000m above sea and 270km of slopes in the Ski Circus area which encompasses various mountain ranges, there’s a vast swathe of crisp corduroy here to suit all types of skiers. Here’s some insider’s info on skiing in Saalbach:

  • Saalbach and Hinterglemm share the same valley, while Fieberbrumm and Leogang share the adjacent valley, but there’s a preponderance of blue and red runs across all the interlinked resorts, along with great novice areas in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

  • Highlights for advanced skiers include a short World Cup black run you can reach via the Zwölferkogelbahn and a few vertiginous black runs under the Schattberg gondola that are around 1000m long .

  • There’s some rugged off-piste here after a heavy dump of pow, especially in an extremely steep area in Fieberbrunn above the Hochhörndl chair.

  • One side of the Saalbach-Hinterglemm area is mainly populated by south-facing slopes which are warm and sunny, but snow conditions can suffer in warm weather, while the north-facing runs on the other side are chillier but retain their snow for the duration.

  • There are a few more challenging intermediate runs at Fieberbrunn and some lovely cruisy blues at the Wilderkarkogel sector that take you all the way down to Leogang.

As you can see, Saalbach-Hinterglemm has much to recommend it for intermediate skiers and there are also a few select treats for expert skiers and freeriding powderhounds.

If you love to socialise and party after a day tackling the sublime Ski circus pistes, parks and ungroomed terrain, the ski hut, bar and club scene in both Saalbach and Hinterglemm is bouncing and there are several sumptuous restaurants to choose from. Here are a few tips on the hotspots where it’s cool to hang out:

  • Goaßstall is a lively spot where you’ll enjoy friendly vibes and live music from the afternoon until the wee small hours. This is an authentic barn-style setting where you can expect loud music and exuberant dancing alongside a herd of mechanical goats ̶ yup, you read that right!

  • The Berger Alm is another brilliant place to party ̶ located under the Magic chairlift at mid-mountain level in Saalbach, there’s a terrific sunny terrace here, great music and a two for one happy hour at 3:30pm.

  • Zum Turm might be one of the most unique nightclubs you’ve ever attended. Set on two levels in a 12th Century church tower, DJs blast out floor fillers from a reclaimed gondola cabin and the crowd really gets rocking!

  • Castello is a swankier club than Zum Turn and it’s located in the Saalbacherhof Hotel in Saalbach village. If you want a glam night out, you’ll find Scandi-cool bands playing live here and silent discos where everyone bobs along to the tunes wearing their headphones.

  • Bauer’s Schi-Alm has four eclectic bars to choose from, each of which is themed (the Cow Bar and Sausage Heaven being two unusual examples!) and there’s a big sun terrace if you want to move the party into the open air.

  • Hotel Peter on the main street in Saalbach serves a fabulous Felsensteak made from local beef and staff wear traditional dress like lederhosen, so it’s definitely an authentic dining experience.

  • Bobby’s Pub is close to the Schattberg gondola in Saalbach and it’s a good place for tasty pub grub like burgers, pizzas and kebabs.

  • Wieseralm above Hinterglemm is located in a cosy wooden hut and boasts a large south-facing terrace with fantastic views. If you want to try traditional Austrian dishes like wiener schnitzel, this is the place to be.
