Ski Accommodation in Grand Massif
Located just an hour’s drive from Geneva, Grand Massif offers a huge variety of terrain across its five main resorts of Flaine, Samöens, Morillon, Les Carroz and Sixt.
There’s an impressive 265km of well-groomed pistes for skiers of all aptitudes in this gorgeous ski area situated in the Northern Alps underneath Mont Blanc. Despite its size, Grand Massif is a bit of a hidden gem ̶ its main resort Flaine is well-known amongst the snowsports community but the charms of the other outstanding resorts, less so. However, there are many reasons that this could be your ideal ski area and Erna Low has a range of awesome accommodation options to help make your stay memorable and magical.
Every resort here offers fab facilities and amenities as well as sublime skiing and scenery. Centrepiece Flaine is a purpose-built resort constructed in the 1960s in a huge natural powdery bowl which was developed under the expert eye of the late, great skiing champion Emil Allais. Although the skiing tops out at around 2500m, the microclimate created by the surrounding mountains creates a natural fridge effect, which means it’s extremely snow-sure. Meanwhile, Les Carroz has a resort altitude of 1200m but it’s snow-reliable on- and off-piste thanks to wooded slopes above the village, and rustic Morillon boasts some of the most popular accommodation and has easy access to some of the most prominent pistes. Samöens sits on the valley floor and although it doesn’t offer doorstep skiing (you hop on a cable car to reach the slopes), the standard of accommodation is high in this authentic old town. Last but not least, Sixt is an ancient, beautiful and serene village which is a haven of tranquillity ̶ again, this isn’t the closest to the slopes but if you’re prioritising peaceful accommodation it can still be a good pick.
As you can see, Grand Massif is diverse enough to cater for any type of Alpine holidaymaker ̶ from dedicated skiers who want to take advantage of the ski-in/ski-out convenience of a resort like Flaine and clock up as many piste miles as possible, to visitors who want to soak up the old world ambience and preternatural beauty of Sixt. And with high class cafes, restaurants, bars and clubs across the area, as well as ample amenities for kids, it’s a great choice for families as well as couples and solo skiers.
As the original Alpine ski package provider, no one is better placed than Erna Low to arrange the ideal Grand Massif ski holiday for you, with everything from accommodation down to ski passes designed to deliver maximum satisfaction!
Ski chalets in Grand Massif
The iconic French Alps ski chalet, with its sloping roof, wooden walls and beams, stone base and decoratively carved windows and balconies, will be familiar even if you’ve never holidayed in the Alps.
It has become synonymous with Alpine hospitality and many a movie and TV series has featured chalet settings where families in festive jumpers gather in living areas to share vin chaud or fondue, or couples cosy up for the evening on rugs in front of roaring fireplaces.
Yet the chalet has much more humble beginnings as an agricultural building used by shepherds to shelter stock and make butter, and arguably it might never have become the iconic ski holiday accommodation had it not been for the pioneering efforts of our founder Erna Low, who introduced the first catered ski chalet vacations to the world way back in 1932.
Classics never go out of style and this adage certainly applies to the ski chalet ̶ although the versions you’ll find in Grand Massif have been expanded to accommodate various suites and apartment units, the exterior still displays the distinctive silhouette. Here are a few of our favourite chalet-style accommodations in this super ski area:
Les Chalets de Léana in Les Carroz is a classic chalet style accommodation crafted from wood and stone, with fully furnished family-friendly apartments designed for self-catering ski breaks in the heart of the resort, just 700m from the ski lift. Wireless is available throughout, baby packages are available on request, linen packages (including bed linen and towels) can be arranged, final cleaning (except the kitchenette area) is part of the package price, small pets and dogs are permitted to stay and private parking is available for a fee. In addition to the well-appointed accommodation, there’s a plush wellness centre with a jacuzzi, hammam and sauna, a large indoor pool and separate kids pool. Apartments are available with 1-4 bedrooms sleeping 2-10 guests comfortably, space is maximised by discreet sofa beds in living areas and there are ample shower rooms and WCs.
Les Chalets de Jouvence are another comfortable accommodation option in Les Carroz d’Araches. This four-star prestige establishment is a mere 400m walk from the centre of the village and nestled at the foot of the slopes, close by the covered magic carpet that whisks you to the Kedeuze cable car and on to the delights of the Grand Massif mountain snowsports playground. With sumptuous Savoyard styling and scenic views, this is a ravishing romantic bolthole for couples but suitable for families too thanks to its fab facilities proximity to the ESF Piou Piou Kindergarten meeting point. As a guest you can enjoy free access to the luxury wellness centre which features hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas, while additional services like beauty treatments and massages can be arranged for a fee. Wi-Fi is available and this is also a pet-friendly accommodation. Suites are available with 1-4 bedrooms, sleeping 2-10 people.
Les Chalets de Laÿssia is a centrally-located Samoëns accommodation that’s certainly worthy of your consideration. With panoramic mountain views of the snow-capped peaks of Le Tuet, Le Criou and Le Môle, this is one of the world’s best places to wake up and sip your coffee as you gaze at the beautiful scenery from your balcony. All apartments have double or twin beds, with shower rooms, WCs, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and fully-equipped kitchenettes containing everything you need to create family snacks or entertain guests. There’s a communal area in reception with a pool table and cosy fireplace and superb spa facilities feature a hammam, sauna, fintness room, indoor pool and children’s pool. Apartment configurations are available with 1-4 bedrooms that sleep 4-10 guests. If you’re looking for a lovely location and accommodation that’s stylish and practical, welcome home.
As you can see, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to classy chalet accommodation in Grand Massif!
