Why Celebrate New Year in the Alps?

It’s simple... New Year in the Alps hits different. If you’ve never experienced an end-of-year celebration on the slopes before, you’re in for a treat, as Alpine resorts and their fellow communities sure know how to throw a proper party! Way up in the mountains, the festivities are every bit as fun as you can imagine – times 10!

As the sun quickly sets on an epic day, the villages light up. With most resorts still decked out in their festive Christmas décor at New Year, the atmosphere is still filled with the yuletide spirit and the markets are still out in full swing with mulled wine, tasty local treats and seasonal souvenirs. As for the New Year celebrations, be prepared for a whole host of fun-filled activities, from torchlit parades winding down the slopes, fireworks with the mountains as a backdrop and lively resort squares packed to the brim with skiers of all ages and nationalities. Particularly in France, when the clock strikes midnight, it’s customary to make as much celebratory noise as possible – so don’t be surprised if you hear sudden bursts of ‘Bonne Année’ across the resort as the fireworks erupt. Truly magical! If you aren’t planning on attending a ticketed club party to let your hair down until the early hours, you can still take a stroll in the streets, mingle with the locals and soak up the festival atmosphere.

Plus, good news for anyone looking to get their ski fix... The New Year period enjoys some of the best snow conditions across Europe. Whether it’s the skiable glaciers in Tignes-Val d’Isère, the north-facing pistes of Zermatt or Alpe d’Huez’s perpetually sunny slopes, January is well-known for getting large dumps of snow, providing you with more than enough snow-time to enjoy. So while most people are recovering with a banging head on New Year’s Day, you could be out there cruising freshly groomed pistes before you even sit down for lunch. Serious question – can you imagine a better way to kick-start your year? No, us neither!

How to Make the Most of Your Time on the Slopes Over New Year

New Year’s week in the Alps is one of the most exciting times to ski but be warned... it’s also peak time, so do be prepared for resorts to be a bit busy. If you want to maximise your slope time and dodge the queues (and who wouldn’t?!), a little planning goes a long way. Here’s how to make every run count during your New Year’s ski holiday:

  • Get out early
We know it’s tempting to have a lie-in after a big night, but the best skiing is often before lunch. Lifts are up and running early and slopes are freshly groomed. Savour that first espresso of the day and get that early session in to make the most of the slopes while most people are still waking up; you’ll thank yourself later.
  • Know your mountain
Spend a bit of time studying the piste map to plot your perfect route before you head out. Work out which lifts get busy and when, where the quieter areas are and how to get around without backtracking. Many resorts have apps with live lift info, which definitely helps when it comes to avoiding bottlenecks. Reading the piste map or downloading the resort app beforehand saves lots of time and will make your whole experience feel seamless. We call that a win!
  • Book your ski extras in advance
Whether it’s ski hire, lift passes or lessons you need, book them early. Because, let’s face it, queuing in resort isn’t how y
  • ou want to spend your first morning. We offer you a one-stop-shop for everything you could possibly need, so when you book your New Year’s ski holiday with Erna Low, you can sort everything in advance, knowing it’s all waiting for you when you arrive.
  • Take advantage of quieter days
New Year’s Day is usually quieter on the slopes (for obvious reasons), so it’s a great day to get out early and enjoy fewer people around. Bonus points if there’s fresh snow (better get praying to the snow Gods!).
  • Make room for breaks
It’s easy to go full throttle when you’re excited, but don’t forget to slow down. Grab a long lunch on the mountain, soak up the view or enjoy a late-afternoon hot chocolate before the evening starts again. After all, it’s the quieter moments that make for a truly unforgettable ski holiday.

Traditional New Year Celebrations in French Ski Resorts

[EL_AltText_Deals3]

If you’re spending New Year in the French Alps, expect to find a mix of traditional festive charm and high-altitude celebration. French ski resorts know how to mark the occasion, and while every resort does it a little differently, the traditions and atmosphere are what make a New Year’s ski holiday unforgettable.

First up, there’s Le Réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre (which loosely translates into Saint Sylvester's feast day); a New Year’s Eve dinner. Several hotels and mountain restaurants serve special menus on 31st December, with courses that go well beyond the usual with all the cheese goodness and a range of indulgent desserts. Outside in the resort and village centres, the buzz starts to build straight after dinner. In many resorts, you’ll find open-air events in the central square with live DJs, fancy light shows, a warming mug of mulled wine, and of course, the all-important fireworks at midnight, which light up the mountains in typical Insta-worthy style.

Torchlight descents are another local favourite event. Ski instructors and local pros wind their way down the slopes with flaming torches, bringing New Year’s magic to the piste while creating a glowing trail of light across the mountains.

New Year’s in the Alps isn’t just about midnight celebrations, though, as the buzz carries on throughout the entire week. The pistes stay busy for a few days after the main event, the après is lively and the overall vibe is somewhere between a relaxed celebration and a full-on winter adventure. Resorts like Les Deux Alpes, Alpe d’Huez, La Plagne and Les Arcs all go big on tradition with just enough energy to keep the party going. So, whether you’re travelling with friends or family, you can guarantee you’ll get a true taste of French festive, but with way more snow to play on.

Italian Style – How the Dolomites Celebrate Capodanno

You can hardly pick a better backdrop than Italy for your New Year’s celebrations in the Alps. Experiencing Capodanno in the Italian Dolomites is nothing short of special. Heavy on tradition across Italy in general, the Dolomiti don’t just celebrate Capodanno; they do it with serious style.

It’s important to note that unlike some of the bigger party resorts in France or Austria, some parts of the Dolomites have a slightly more relaxed celebratory vibe. But don’t worry – that doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on a fun night out. Several resort communities like Cortina d'Ampezzo and Madonna di Campiglio come alive on New Year’s Eve with all the usual NYE goodness, including street parties, fireworks, mountain hut parties and a warm, sociable atmosphere that feels authentically Italian.

On the evening of December 31st, you'll notice the buzz start to build up in the centres and squares in resort with lots of people mingling and waiting for the fun to start. Restaurants serve up special multi-course dinners (so get your bookings early!), complete with delicious local wine, home-cooked regional dishes and the all-important lenticchie e cotechino – a traditional dish of lentils and pork sausage that’s meant to bring good luck for the year ahead.

As midnight approaches, fireworks light up the jagged peaks and you’ll see skiers and snowboarders heading to the bars or gathering with friends outside to raise a glass. And just like the French resorts, you’ll also most likely catch a magical torchlit descent usually held and carried out by the ski school instructors. Resorts like Selva di Val Gardena, and Corvara offer a great mix of atmosphere, snow and style; perfect if you want to ring in the New Year somewhere unforgettable.

The Best Resorts in Europe for New Year Après!

Sure, it didn’t take much, but we’re pretty sure we’ve managed to convince you to swap the city bricks for snowy peaks. Great! Now it’s time to find that perfect ski resort for New Year fun times. The good news is that the majority of the resorts in Europe offer great festivities, so you can’t really go wrong with wherever you choose. Nevertheless, here are Erna Low’s top picks:

  • Val Thorens
With its high-energy atmosphere, epic après and celebratory nights, Val Thorens and New Year’s pretty much go hand-in-hand. It’s already well-known for its impressive altitude, but come New Year’s Eve, it’s VT’s party scene that takes the celebrations up to a whole new dizzying level. The resort hosts what can only be described as an open-air festival right in the heart of the village, complete with fireworks, live music and a buzzing crowd that doesn’t stop until the sun comes back up. Start early at La Folie Douce for DJs and dancing on the terrace before making your way down to the bars for midnight mayhem. In particular, The Malaysia, which it claims is the largest nightclub in the Alps, is the perfect place to welcome in the New Year.
  • Avoriaz
Looking for somewhere heavy on family vibes but still *big* on the festive celebrations? Avoriaz is a no-brainer. The village is car-free, snow-sure and famed for its torchlit parades, incredible slopeside fireworks and ski-in/ski-out access to the bars.... Basically everything you need from a New Year’s ski holiday and ideal if you want a fun, social vibe with a bit more alpine charm. Check out Flaine for a similar vibe.
  • St Anton
The rowdy resort of St Anton goes big on both skiing and NYE celebrations. The resort has it all... legendary live music, charming local traditions, brilliant slopes and plenty of opportunities to raise (and chug) an entire stein before hitting the slopes the next morning (although definitely not recommended for the fainthearted!). In summary, St Anton is a great resort for groups who want serious snow and a solid party scene.
  • Ischgl
Even though Ischgl brings a slightly more polished and refined edge to its party scene, it still knows how to turn up the volume on NYE with open-air stages, huge fireworks displays and an entertaining mix of live acts and DJ sets. The resort’s après-ski venues, like Kuhstall and Trofana Alm, stay packed until the early hours and the vibe is quite simply electric.
  • Zermatt
Over in Zermatt, the party vibes stay high and are blended with stylish restaurants, boutique bars and a mix of festive fun and Alpine glamour. And when the snow’s this reliable, you’ll find the perfect mix of ski-time fun and after-hours celebrations.

Family-Friendly New Year Ski Holidays

New Year in the mountains isn’t just for the full-on party crowd. If you’re travelling with kids or simply want a more low-key, family-friendly night out, a ski holiday over New Year can be just as fun and memorable – only you won’t need to keep everyone up past midnight (unless you want to, of course!).

Many resorts go all-in for families during the festive season. You’ll find early-evening fireworks, live music, torchlight descents and “kids will love this” entertainment designed with smaller guests in mind. A New Year ski holiday offers the chance to celebrate with your absolute favourite people, surrounded by snow, fairy lights and all the festive buzz still in full swing.

Staying in family-friendly accommodation like self-catering apartments or hotels with kids’ clubs makes life on the ground easy, too. You’ll have ample space to unwind after a full day on the hill, the freedom to eat when you want and, most importantly, access to the chairlifts is practically on your doorstep – because carrying ski gear and a toddler doesn’t need to be part of your holiday workout.

Resorts like La Plagne, Les Gets, Avoriaz and Les Menuires are brilliant choices for New Year with little ones. These spots combine brilliant confidence-building beginner areas, snow-sure conditions and fun off-slope activities; from sledging and snowshoeing to ice rinks and swimming pools... All the ingredients that make for a truly memorable winter adventure.
